In this episode Laura starts her deep dive into the Murdaugh family's timeline. In the family’s orbit, there are at least five dead bodies in six years, including Stephen Smith, Gloria Satterfield, Mallory Beach, and Maggie and Paul. However, Laura doesn't stop there. She takes a wide-angle lens approach to the case, tracing it back to the beginning of the Murdaugh family's reign of power and influence. This includes business partnerships with convicted drug traffickers and the suspicious death of a key federal witness just before he was due to give evidence.

 

As Laura continues her analysis, she also examines the shifting dynamics between Murdaugh and two significant women in his life. Both women begin questioning him about money, refusing to play by his rules. Additionally, Laura delves into the boat crash that resulted in Mallory Beach's death and a lawyer who was not afraid to hold Murdaugh accountable and ensure justice for the Beach family at all costs.

Between 1986 and 1989, at least six young people were murdered and two more disappeared across Virginia. The FBI long believed the crimes were likely the work of a serial killer. Among the victims were Cathy Thomas and Rebecca Dowski, murdered in October 1986.

Laura details and shares her thoughts and analysis on the micro timeline, including Murdaugh’s explanation for his sudden burst of activity - of his 283 steps in 4 minutes whilst making many phone calls.

Laura discusses the curious missing calls from Murdaugh’s call log, and how, despite the call records showing his many calls to reach Maggie, his behaviour reveals he consciously avoided going to the kennels to speak with Maggie. Laura also gets into the 4820 data points that tracked Murdaugh’s Suburban that night and how he travelled on dark country roads at 80mph, whilst texting his lawyer friend. On 15 February 2020, Love Island presenter and one of Britain’s biggest stars, Caroline Flack was found dead at her home in Stoke Newington, London; in August, a coroner’s inquest recorded a verdict of suicide.

Before her death, Caroline was arrested in 2019 by the Metropolitan Police and later charged for assault.  She became the target of a relentless media storm. Vilified in the press and online, her world spiraled.

Caroline spoke with Dov about making a documentary about what really happened.  The next day she was found dead. Devastated and distressed, Christine, Caroline’s mother, never stopped searching for the truth about her daughter’s final moments, and she agreed to do the documentary of the story Caroline never got to share.
