  • Recovery From an Eating Disorder Pro Cyclist Clara Koppenburg
Before our interview, we cover a listener question and then take a look back at some Diamond League and forward to UTMB. We also discuss teenage phenoms Cooper Luteknhaus and Gout Gout. Finally we hear from Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Hannah Walker regarding weight in the Women’s peloton. Clara Koppenburg is a professional road cyclist known for her versatility and climbing strength. She was encouraged to start cycling by her father who is a team doctor. Armed with a sports science degree (University of Konstanz, completed in 2018), Clara blends intellect, athleticism, and commitment to her craft. What truly sets Clara apart is her courageous openness about her personal challenges. In a recent, deeply personal revelation, she shared her journey through an eating disorder, the loss of her menstrual cycle for six years, and her path to recovery. She declared, “I won myself back”, emphasizing that reclaiming her health was her greatest victory—even without big race wins. (00:00) Introduction(00:22) Medical Question(02:00) David’s Running  (04:44) David’s UTMB Experience (06:40) Xylon’s Update (11:05) Community Shoutouts (13:30) Listener Question - Adidas Treadmill Shoe (16:50) Cooper Lutkenhaus Signs a Pro Contract(19:49) Gout Gout Runs Sub 10 Seconds (21:29) Fastest Ever 100k Run(25:26) Diamond League Lausanne (28:30) Diamond League Brussels (39:48) David’s Tokyo World Championships Predictions (36:52) UTMB Observations (43:07) Weight in Women’s Cycling (44:15) Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio’s Thoughts (52:19) Hannah Walker’s Thoughts  (59:14) Interview Starts(1:01:11) Did Clara Expect the Response from her Instagram Post (1:04:04) How Is Clara’s Experience Day to Day Now vs When Suffering?  (1:12:28) What Made Clara Make a Change?   (1:17:00) How Does Clara Navigate the Performance Environment? (1:24:25) What Can Teams Do Better To Support Riders? (1:29:39) Should Cycling Have Screening Pre Race to Prevent RED-S?(1:36:12) Clara’s Lack of Body Dysmorphia (1:39:50) Clara’s Cookbook (1:42:50) Review (1:43:54) What We Will Be Watching Thanks to Precision Fuel and Hydration for their sponsorship, use the link below to get 15% off your first order and support the podcast: https://visit.pfandh.com/theonepercentbetterpodcastIf you’re unsure how which products to use or how to plan your race nutrition check out Precision’s Fuel & Hydration Planner (if you follow this you will have your discount applied automatically on your first order too): https://visit.pfandh.com/onepercentfuelplannerThanks also to Stryd for their sponsorship, check out Stryd:Stryd helps you optimize your training and racing by measuring your running power, providing real-time data to improve efficiency, pace, and performance on any terrain.
