This is a personal story. Every child is different, every family’s experience is different, and this is simply our story.
Kids can be masters at being chameleons. They often don’t want to stand out, be different, or admit that they learn differently. They can become incredibly good at hiding their struggles—until, one day, the wheels come off.
The truth is that teachers and school systems aren’t always equipped to fully understand every child’s learning differences. But we’ve learned that we don’t have to rely solely on the system to understand how our children learn.
For us, it’s about understanding our child’s IEP, understanding how their brain works, and giving them the tools they need to navigate their challenges. It’s about helping them create their own roadmap to success—on their own terms.
We choose to celebrate effort over perfection. We try to understand the gaps rather than shame them. And above all, we want to help our kids grow into confident people.
At the end of the day, that’s what we’re trying to protect most: their confidence. You can work on grades. You can build new skills. You can find different paths forward. But confidence is much harder to get back once it’s been taken away.

We’re officially entering our university/college drop-off era! We’re talking about the emotional roller coaster of sending our kids off to university, and the insanity of university dorm rooms — from $20K–$30K makeovers and peel-and-stick wallpaper to the question of whether we’re making college too comfortable for our kids. Do they really need a perfectly decorated room, stocked snacks and fancy shower bottles, or is a little “jail cell” living part of the experience? Plus, we’re getting real about the chaos of move-in day, watching our kids grow up, and the realization that once they leave, life at home will never be exactly the same. We’re excited, terrified, slightly delusional and pretending everything is fine. Because everything is fine....right??

As we get ready to ship one kid off to university we felt it was a great time to bring back this repeat episode!

We have been touring universites and wow - these kids are putting so much pressure on themselves to figure it all out. Our advice is start early. Exploring options sooner helps to take the weight off and make the decision process simpler in Grade 12/seniour year. Remind kids that their first choice might not be their forever choice. With the right guidance, they can always change direction. Sometimes just knowing it’s not forever makes the whole journey so much easier.
