Welcome back to our REWIND series! Christi and Kelly are going back through the archive, re-editing, and re-uploading our old episodes — in order, from the very beginning of Dance Moms. This week, they’re revisiting season 1, episode 8 (“Love On The Dance Floor”), where Abby brings in Brandon to dance with Brooke and immediately turns the whole thing into one of the most awkward setups in early Dance Moms history!

The idea is that Brooke and Brandon need chemistry for the group dance. But once Abby starts talking about their past “fling,” forces them on a date, and pushes them to act like there is some big romantic connection, everything gets uncomfortable FAST! Brooke is only 13, clearly not into it, and the entire storyline becomes less about the dance and more about whether Abby can force two kids to “connect” on camera.

Joining the show is Diane Pent, Brandon’s mom. Together, they look back on the behind-the-scenes chaos of filming in Florida for this episode. From the Fun Spot date to the terrible group dance, the watermelon game at Abby’s house, and the first signs of the show getting bigger, this episode has all the classic early Dance Moms weirdness!

Christi and Kelly recap Dance Moms season 5, episode 27 — “Abby vs. Kira… Again,” where Abby returns after mysteriously disappearing for a week, only to find out Kira has brought in someone else to work with Kalani.

This time, it is Alexa — Kalani’s real teacher from Arizona — and Kira makes it clear she wants Kalani to shine in her home state with choreography that actually shows who she is as a dancer. That means Abby has to sit there while another teacher works with one of her strongest dancers, and the tension is impossible to ignore.

But the drama does not stop with Kalani’s solo. The Candy Apples are back without Cathy, Jeanette is trying to prove Ava can beat Kalani again, and Abby pulls Kalani from the group dance before they go head-to-head in Phoenix. By the end, Kalani is in tears, Kira is ready to leave again, and Christi and Kelly are left watching another Dance Moms fight where the real issue seems bigger than the one happening on camera.

The moment starts when Abby gives Nia an animal-print costume for “They Call Me Laquifa” and then asks if Holly has an afro wig... and that's where things start getting uncomfortable.
Christi and Kelly look back on Holly’s reaction, the lunch conversation that followed, and why this was about much more than one costume piece.

They also revisit the hallway confrontation after Nia performs, where Holly tells Abby that Nia is a dancer first — not an ethnicity first. Between the “let me pull one out of my purse” comment, Abby defending the routine as an “ethnic opportunity,” and Holly finally calling out how Nia was being portrayed, this becomes one of the earliest moments where Holly truly stands her ground.

Christi and Kelly recap Dance Moms season 5, episode 26 ("Where in the World Is Abby Lee Miller?"), where Abby does something almost unheard of: she disappears for the entire week.

After last episode’s blowup with Kira and Kalani, the team shows up wondering if Abby will actually come back. But instead of another screaming match, another pyramid meltdown, or another dramatic entrance, there is just… no Abby. Gianna runs rehearsal, the girls prepare their solos, and everyone tries to figure out whether Dance Moms can function without the person who usually controls the room.

And somehow, it does. The girls compete, the team keeps moving, and the drama finds a new place to land. Kendall’s music release is supposed to be the big storyline of the week, but Nia’s music career keeps getting pulled into the spotlight too, leading to a messy fight between Jill and Holly over whose daughter is finally getting a moment.

With Abby gone, the episode turns into a very different kind of chaos. The girls are still trying to win, the moms are still trying to protect their kids’ moments, and Christi and Kelly are left asking the obvious question: where the hell was Abby?
