Jennifer Chesak is an award-winning freelance science and medical journalist, editor, and fact-checker based in Nashville, Tennessee. She earned her master of science degree in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill. And her work has appeared in the Washington Post, Healthline, Better Homes and Gardens, The Daily Beast, B*tch, and more. Her most recent book is The Psilocybin Handbook for Women: How Magic Mushrooms, Psychedelic Therapy, and Microdosing Can Benefit Your Mental, Physical, and Spiritual Health. I wanted to bring her on the show to share everything she’s learned while writing this book. She has a wealth of information from how to microdose and trip sit to understanding the latest psychedelic research, and incorporating indigenous wisdom. • 065 | Ketamine 101: Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy & Making Treatment Accessible with Dr. Kyle Greenway
It’s the ketamine episode you’ve been waiting for! Ketamine is not technically a (classic) psychedelic, yet it behaves like one. Many researchers and scientists in the psychedelic space consider it to be a psychedelic, and are applying the psychedelic assisted psychotherapy model to its use. This episode is a treasure trove of information for those who are considering ketamine for treatment, and those who want to learn more about this “chameleon” drug. Delivering this information is Dr. Kyle Greenway; a highly respected ketamine researcher and psychiatrist. He keeps a low profile, so it was truly special to have him on the show.Dr. Greenway is a psychiatrist and assistant professor at McGill University. He completed a research fellowship at Imperial's psychedelic research centre and co-led the development of two academic clinics utilizing ketamine in treatment-resistant depression. These clinics are amongst the only services in the world to provide ketamine-assisted therapy in public healthcare systems.Beyond his academic accolades, Dr. Greenway is very fun to learn from. I promise you that even though this conversation is highly academic, we had a lot of fun talking about serious subject matter.Topics covered:What is Ketamine? & its historyWhy Ketamine is so dose-dependentWhy Ketamine is a “chameleon” drugHow Ketamine started to be used for mental health conditionsKetamine vs classic psychedelicsThe “after glow” / anti-depressive effectRisks with abusing ketamine, such as “ketamine bladder”Who and what ketamine is effective forWhy the “inner healing intelligence” might be harmfulWhat a ketamine treatment protocol looks likeThe future of psychedelic assisted therapy and ketamineShow Links:Microdosing Psychedelics - free workshop - SAVE YOUR SEAT!Earth Runners Earthing Sandals - LANA to save 10%Research paper on ImprintingShow NotesThis episode was produced in collaboration with FWI Media.
